Thinking again about fishin'
Since I now have another camper.. I have been thinking about fishing again. I would be a pretty casual fisherman. Probably just at lakes or streams close to campgrounds. I have some camping friends, who are avid fisherpeople.. and I might like to join them from time to time.
Anyway.. my question is about fishing rods and reels. what would you suggest? I will probably buy something from WALMART. It doesn't have to be top notch.. I doubt I would spend more than $20-$30. Do you like closed reels, like the Zebco 606, etc.. or the open type? It's been a long time since I have have fished and I'm not really sure what I would like. I have fished with both, when I was a kid. There are some combo deals at WALMART.. as low as $15.

I'm not a big fisherperson myself, but Butch and the girls both like to do a little fishing when we camp near water. We used to have a place on the lake and Butch would stay up most of the night fishing.....I would hit the bed or sleep on the pontoon boat with him.
Anyway, unless you plan to do some serious competition fishing, I would just get something cheap and easy. That way, if you don't want to fish, you won't feel compelled because you spent lots of $$$ on a rod/reel. The fish don't really know how much it costs anyway

I think by far the easiest type to use is a Spincasting reel and rod set like this one: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Zebco-33-Fishing-Combo/8144058
$19.48 for the combo set. The Zebco 33 has been around for more years than I can remember.
Dar uses one like this and loves it.
I have used a spinning combo almost exclusively for years Like this one:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Shakespeare-Ugly-Stick-Spinning-35-Combo/2520503
$29.96 for the combo set.
Either one will give you years of care free service.
You are welcome to stop by the house before you buy to try them both out and see which one you like the best. I have some practice plugs that we can use in the backyard...

thanks.. I looked at these at WAL-MART.. In fact I really liked the Zebco 33 and the Zebco 606.. I wanted to wait for your expert opinion before I made a purchase.

Thanks Chuck, I don't think I could refer to myself as having an "expert" opinion on fishing...or the equipment. I know several people with a lot more knowledge about fishing and equipment. I've just been using these types of "inexpensive" rod and reel combos for a number of years and know which ones have worked very well for the money.

Re: Thinking again about fishin'
Chuck, the closed face reel is great for keeping in the camper. You don't get line that gets loose easily and tangles up everything. I love my Zebco 33 combos, but that 606 isn't a bad reel. If you don't want to learn a lot about fishing, but just want to catch a few fish, it's hard to beat that Zebco 33 combo.
Plus, I like whatever equipment Dave Kral likes! It saves me time and heartache to just look at his (and your) stuff and replicate it when I can afford it.

Hey Al, I've bought my girls Zebco 33 combos, if I can talk them into it, do you want their old "little girl" rod and reels? They work fine. We are in "get rid of old stuff" mode at my house.
Re: Thinking again about fishin'
If they can part with them, that would be great!!

Chuck, my kids are giving their rigs to Alan's kids. There's nothing grown up about it. Al Caroline and Lilia are definitely in on passing along the rod and reels to Macy and Rachel. Jon is hanging on to his a while longer, so Chuck, you may luck out in the long run. Jon's is a SpiderMan theme, so you can be more manly.
Still, there is merit to the way JB thinks. He's gonna fit in just fine with this group.

Re: Thinking again about fishin'
Sounds like you got a good deal. So you got the license first and then got the rod, way to go. I'm ready to go fishing too (no license yet). I've been winging it for the past year.

and this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000B7OUNK/ref=oh_o00_s01_i00_details
the tackle kit probably has some stuff I dont need.. but the reviews say its worth the $$.. for a starter kit.
