Tags and out of state trips.
Tennessee doesn't require me to buy a tag for my Pop-up, of that I'm sure. They told me that some buy tags to have ownership on record and for insurance purposes, but that it's not required if it's for personal use. Same thing with a small utility trailer.
I've hauled it to Alabama without a tag, but I don't recall a cop being behind me at any time. I suspect that the tag isn't necessary for out of state travel, since I'm pulling it with a Tennessee vehicle and I have a Tennessee License, and have been told the same. I'm wondering if I'm asking for issues if I start traveling out of state with the PUP with no tag? I don't want to be pulled over and grilled by a bored cop, but I don't want to buy a tag that I don't have to buy either. I pay enough taxes.
I know at Warrior's Path, they always ask for the camper tag number. When I say it has none, they ask for the tow vehicle tag number instead.

Re: Tags and out of state trips.
In our case when we originally bought the PUP, we went to have the title put in our name. We were told at that time that we were not required to have the PUP tagged unless we were traveling out of state with it. It is not required to be tagged if it is only towed in-state. I tried to find this info on Tennessee.gov website but was unable to even find anything about tags for campers/rv's/trailers on the site at all. Maybe a phone call to your local DMV will answer the question.

I think the problem is with out of state travel. I have heard of some states that require you to enter their scales to be weighed. Tn. only weighs commercial vehicles. It basically boils down to the owner to check out each states laws concerning towing a vehicle such as a PUP.

Sounds like it might be worth getting the tag to avoid the potential hassle.

When I bought my 5er, there were certain states that required that you had safety glass installed. I think California was one of them.

Richard, in VA anything that is ridden, driven or pulled on a highway or roadway is required to have a tag OTHER THAN a farm use vehicle. It can only travel within 50 miles of it's home.
VA taxes EVERYTHING....my yearly personal property taxes are $350 on my TT, plus the cost of tags, which are $35/year or $60/2 years.
Years ago, we had a police chief here in Norton that was from Bluff City/Blountville area. He had a boat that he kept on Boone Lake. Occasionally, he would bring it to Norton and he averaged getting stopped about every other trip since he didn't have tags on it. He finally got them just to keep from having the hassle of getting stopped.
If you plan to do many trips out of state, it might be worth your while to get tags for it. If you are only going to do one or two here locally, it might not be worth your while, but check with DMV over there.
By the way, we went to the Gulf Coast last summer and we lost our tag in Scott Co, VA on our way. We didn't even know it until we got to Gulf Shores and I happened to notice that it was missing. We travelled back to VA 2 weeks later without a tag with no problem at all. Our tag was waiting here at the house for us. A deputy had found it and sent it on back to us.

Yeah, that situation your friend with the boat is my issue. I wouldn't have to pay a fine, but I don't want the hassle. My old pup won't have much value, so the tag won't be much.
Re: Tags and out of state trips.
I believe all trailer tags in TN are $14.00.

I'll start a fund and save up Tim. I didn't know they were that cheap. I certainly don't want hassle if I can get a tag for $14.

It seems like my utility trailer tag, the one year I bought one, was about $14. So, that sounds right.

Yes it is a cheap way to avoid the hassle of being stopped out of state.
