Trailer Tags?
Does anyone know if you are required to get a tag for a small under 20 ft travel trailer if you keep it in the state of TN? Also would I have to pay sales tax when I register it in tn if I bought it in nc? Thanks

Re: Trailer Tags?
When we bought the PUp, we were told by the DMV that we did not have to get tags if it is only used in TN. We knew we were going to go out of state with it so we purchased tags anyway.
We did, however camp a few times without tags. Never had a problem with police.
When we bought the HTT last fall. we did take it to Cove Lake last year without having tags about a week or two after the purchase. We then registered it this spring and got the tags because we know we will be camping out of state with it.
Dar should be able to tell you how much they were.

STATE OF TENNESSEE SAYS:
Camping Trailers
All camping trailers, regardless of dimensions, must be titled and registered except those that collapse or fold down.

ALSO FOUND THIS:
Camper Titles and Vehicle Registration
There is no one blanket registration rule for campers. Each state governs campers or truck campers differently. In Ohio, for example, no registration is required, but you must obtain a car title. Illinois mandates both a title and registration, while California requires neither. And Idaho demands titling, but only for campers purchased after 2009. For the rules of your state, consult the grid below.
If you reside in a state requiring registration and/or titling, you'll find the process is almost identical to registering or titling a regular vehicle. Call your DMV before visiting for fee and identification requirements.

Re: Trailer Tags?
This may be true that Tags/registration are not required. But...for me it just doesn't seem right to have a trailer (of any length) unless its used on a farm and never leaves that farm not to register the trailer. Think of it this way. If say there was ever a question of ownership, the registration/tag is the easiest way to prove this. I would imagine that if one was to get pulled by the Polozei and you didn't have any tag of such you might have some questions as to whom the owner is.
Just saying...

Re: Trailer Tags?
Thanks fellas for all your information. I guess I will be off to get tags. I got confused because I have a tiny cargo trailer I use for hauling trash to the dump and that doesnt have to be registered.Being registered would prove ownership, never thought of that which would definately be worth it.

Re: Trailer Tags?
Don't know where that information from Chuck came from, but in Virginia, you MUST have ANYTHING that moves upon the roadway tagged, registered and titled!!! That list says no required registration - you won't make it through the first small little town without tags on a trailer - usually, even if you are out of state.

Re: Trailer Tags?
For $14.75, I should go ahead and get a tag for the PUP, just to avoid a hassle in neighboring states.
Re: Trailer Tags?
Richard, the $14.75 is only the renewal fee. I am not sure what the registration would be.
