James Island County Park, Charleston, SC
We spend Spring Break here this year. We had never been....drove through it last year while in the area. Lots of local friends have gone and loved it. Figured we would give it a try.
It is just outside of Charleston, across the bridge from downtown. From my campsite to downtown Charleston, King St., it takes 10 minutes. During the summer, the campground runs a shuttle to/from downtown and Patriot's Point. (Fort Sumter and the aircraft carrier).
The campground is on 2 loops with a few pull-thrus in each loop, but mostly back-ins. The sites are level, but some are smaller with not much room between sites. They are mostly shady and have fire rings at each site as well as water, sewer and electric. There is no cable, but you can pick up all the network channels (NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, PBS) from either Charleston or Savannah.
There is a good size bath house in the middle of each loop with 4 commodes and 4 showers in each one along with a couple of sinks. Outside the bath houses are the laundry. There are 4 washers and 4 dryers at each bath house. I don't know why they are outside, but they work great and there are outdoor swingss (couches) for you to sit in while you wait and the WIFI there is GREAT.
The park has a water park on-site, but costs additional. It was not open while we were there (thank goodness) because it was still cold, especially at night. There are at least 6-8 miles of trails within the park, not counting the roadways. There is a wonderful dog park where you can take your friend and let them run. It is on a little peninsula with a fence along the back side and lake around the other sides. The dogs can get in an swim or just run through the water. You can also fish while your dog plays around and there are a few picnic tables.
They have a wonderful playground - 2 actually. 1 for up to 5 years of age and another for 5-12 year olds. They both have the rubbery ground covering and if you fall, it cushions your fall. Ask Jayda. There are lots and lots of playground equipment - I can't even name them all. There is also a large field, many picnic tables, a large covered picnic area (with a seasonal food vendor).
We loved it and will plan to return soon.

Thanks for the info... I looked it up and all I can say is WOW. I'm adding that one to my bucket list as well.

We just got back from James Island, SC. We spent a week down there, and it was fantastic! You could stay the whole week in the park and have plenty to do without even leaving the park. Downtown Charleston is only 15-20 minutes away, and the beaches are close as well. If you have a dog, you'll appreciate the huge dog park that is within the park.
We will definitely be going back!

Yes, we will definitely be going back, but plan to go when the waterpark is open.
