Caulking top of HTT Roof
We covered the camper yesterday. Sad part we found that the caulk running along the seam was cracking. So before we head out next spring we will need to caulk some areas on the roof. I do not want to stand on the roof when repairing the caulk, I am not sure that would be safe. But since this is a rubber roof, is there something special that we need to use or do?

I was going to make suggestions until I heard that the roof is rubber. I've got no experience with that. First you'll need to figure out just what you have. Clearly it's not natural rubber, as that wouldn't hold up to the sun for even one season.
Once you determine the substance it's made of, it will be pretty easy to figure out what caulk will stick to it best and still hold up to the elements.

Sorry Coolbreeze, I was trying to correct my spelling errors, but I no longer see your post. At first when I saw the caulk it looked like chalk. It is bad so we will need to look further into this after winter

That's strange......Just where did my post go to? You can find the caulk that you need at any rv place. I think for the roof, it is called self leveling caulk.Darcamper wrote:Sorry Coolbreeze, I was trying to correct my spelling errors, but I no longer see your post. Ahhh the power vested in the administrator. Look, up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, it's "The Darminator!" Able to delete Tim's post with a single bound. LOL.

I am researching what type of caulk we will need, but I wonder will the roof need to be sealed after the caulk is added?

Re: Caulking top of HTT Roof
Found this bit of information, now if we should coat the roof or not?
(Don't ever use silicone for water leaks around camper windows, or on rubber roofs, etc... It simply does not stop water leaks. Recommend using eternabond for rubber roofs, and you can buy replacement window puddy to seal your windows.)

Re: Caulking top of HTT Roof
It warms my heart to see you taking such good care of the camper I hope to buy in a few years.
Dar, have you ever made a dehumidifier out of ice melt? I'm thinking of trying it. Just put some in a plastic container with holes on the up side for air to circulate through, and then let the salty water drip out the bottom into the sink.
The popupportal site (or is it popupexplorer) has stories of HTT folks with condensation problems, reportedly due to the uneven heating of the fold out bunks vs the rest of the camper. I hope the bunk end fan helps with some of that for you guys.

Re: Caulking top of HTT Roof
We have fixed the condensation problems with the bunk ends. As long as the reflective is in the windows and the blankets on the top of the bunk ends. Also, I leave a window open a little and the blankets that fold out on the inside bunk end top. The blankets, I added to the inside, to help keep the sun light from awaking me up so early in the morning.
Once the seam on the top of the camper is sealed, I hope no more water leaks when raining. I am researching everything I can about this rubber roof stuff. now I need it to get warmer...

Re: Caulking top of HTT Roof
i guess you have found out by now.. rubber roofs on campers are the norm.. not the exception. Mine has a rubber roof.. most of them do.

here's a pretty good article on a complete rubber roof "re-do" http://www.macandchris.com/RubberRoof.htm
Re: Caulking top of HTT Roof
I guess I just about used most stuff on market. IMO I think Liquid Rubber Roof was the best and is still working after two years. Costly yes 5 gal bucket about 570.00. They say it is good for ten years I did try Eternabond Tape only problem when roof starts chalking into a power it fails and tape start coming off. As far as around skylights, vents.seams it does good then coat it over with liquid rubber roof.

Wow! I'd still be passed out from sticker shock if I priced 5 gallons of anything like that at $570. At that price it should generate solar electric to charge your battery while stopping leaks at the same time. Makes me appreciate the aluminum roof on Miss Danger. Easy to patch.
Re: Caulking top of HTT Roof
Yes big bucks but what would a roof replacement, in my case 3,500 now that's big bucks

Even bigger Yikes! 3500 for a roof for a camper? that much money would buy a lot of Gorilla tape!
