Meal Planning for 2010 Empty Meal Planning for 2010

Post  Darcamper Tue Nov 24, 2009 9:48 pm

Funny things a person can come up with when we think of camping. I was planning Thanksgiving dinner and came up with a meal plan for camping.
I put a three day meal on an index card so when we are ready to camp, I will pull a card. Also on the back has a grocery list with what I need to buy and a estimate cost. Example:
Breakfast-Egg's, bacon, pancakes, and fruit
Lunch-If by the fire or grilled-brats and hot dogs, bacon wrapped stuffs jalapeno
Dinner-BBQ Ribs, potato salad, grilled vegs and bread

I also added the drink products as well as milk and snacks like chips cookies and peanut butter w/crackers.

Now instead of a tub to store the food in, I have picked a cabinet in the TT just for food use only. Spices will also be stored in there as well.

I had fun.............now if I could put money in an envelope and pull an envelope, camping will almost be prepare free...

That's a great idea. I could let the kids pick the meals from a stack of cards.

Hey Darlene, if you ever type those cards up, I'd like to have copies. Or, if that's just not going to happen, bring them on the next trip so I can see them. I still think this is a superb idea.

This is such a great idea! We end up spending WAY too much on food when we camp. I can't wait to get started on this.

I always imagine myself cooking all these elaborate things, and we end up eating sandwiches because I spend my time doing anything but cooking. Don't get me wrong, I like to cook, but it's hard to time cooking things with the three kids underfoot, and they are too little and gullible to roam freely while I cook. I'm planning more and more "make ahead" meals.

I too spend way too much on snacks and such. When my wife shops for the camping trip, it's like she's outfitting an expidition into the wilderness. I explain that we are usually in campgrounds near civilization (Walmart, Home Depot, Food City = Civilization).

I have cheep stuff listed so I can stay with in the budget for each trip.
Richard, if you attend the RV show I will bring copies of the cards with me. There are 10 meals another example:

Breakfast: Aaron/Dave My favorite cereal "Lucky Charms" and bananas
Lunch: Peanut butter sandwiches
Dinner: BLT's and chips--Pre-cooked bacon
Snacks: Apples, cheese & crackers

I really like the sites you listed, that is a great resource point. Thanks

It's a good thing Darlene plans the meals. Dave would get to go camping once or twice a year, but would eat well while there.

I might be able to come up with a few $$ out of my "allowance" to buy my own steak to bring with. Then it really would be "Dave's Steak" all to myself......

Here's a forum on camp meals that fits right in with this thread. Lots of great fast and easy camp meal stuff here.
http://nature.gardenweb.com/forums/load/camping/msg0412183319880.html
I really like the idea of having some non-perishible foods that I can have in the PUP that could be used for meals for the kids and me, with no trip to the grocery store. Now, most trips I will make some stuff just ahead of the trip, or get stuff to cook. Still, there are times when I'd like to just take off and go for a couple of nights with no real planning needed.

You're right Richard she can bring the "smallest one she can find" and have it all to herself...I would even grill it for her.

(I might have to sleep on the couch for this post.)

I like my rib-eye marinated in Dale's for about 45 mins. Then cooked to a medium or medium well. Baked potato with sour cream & butter.

Sorry about that, I was hungry when I posted.

Here's your shopping list...

1- rib-eye steak. whatever size you like.
1- bottle of Dale's
1- potato
1- small container of sour cream (we usually have butter)
1- beer for the cook.

Start marinating the steak about 1 hour before you'd like to eat.
give me the steak after 45 minutes and I will take care of the rest.
