Flag Rock Recreation Area - Norton, VA
This is my "home" campground. It is about 5 miles from my house, but it is about 3/4 way up High Knob Mountain. It is city owned/operated facility and has electric at each site, water available in the park and a dumpstation. Each site has a fire pit with grill. It costs $12/night.
No reservations, 1st come, 1st served.
There are 2 different camping areas, the upper and lower campgrounds. The upper is mostly for larger RVs with asphalt and pea gravel sites. These sites are not private, but offer spectacular views of the mountains. (See my pics - spring 2009 of camper are the upper campground, site #3 and the upper campground bathhouse) The rocks the girls are climbing are the Flag Rock overlook, which is a good hike, maybe a mile, from the campground or a quick drive. There are many picnic shelters our near the overlook. It overlooks Norton.

The lower campground offers more private, wooded sites, but the views are not as good. These sites are smaller and my camper will only fit in 3 of them since it's 33' long.
Flag Rock is one of my favorite places in the world. It rivals the views in Alaska and Maine.

Flag Rock overlook sure sounds more appealing than the couple of hikes I've made with kids up Bufallo Mountain (here in Johnson City) to get to the white rock lookout. My favorite hikes that involve a lot of climbing are done in the Chevy.

Indeed, The suburban has many more miles than the hiking boots.
