Based on Merrykalia's photos of Flag Rock and the info at this website
http://www.wisecountychamber.org/campgrounds.htm
I'm going to be doing some camping across the border in Virginia. I've see the "Natural Tunnel" campground and it looks good. I'm going to "volunteer" to camp outside the state.

This would be a nice weekend trip, but how far is it from Knoxville?

Google maps puts it at 2 hours and 40 minutes Darlene. 148 miles. You'll do good till you get to the Va line, then you loose the interstate. Hwy 23 isn't bad, but it's over the mountain. I bought my PUP over that way. It will be about an hour and a half for me, maybe a little longer. That's 69 miles.

We can make it to exit 407 in about 2 hours, 10 minutes. Don't know exactly where you are so....

Natural Tunnel is 25 minutes closer to you, just right off of Rt 23. Rt 23 is part of I-26, it just goes through a town with red lights, so they can't classify it as interstate, but it is all 4-lane highway. It's a nice drive, especially when it's green.

Natural Tunnel is great. Richard, since you are "penny pinching" right now, this would be a great place for you and the kids. They have a NICE pool with a water slide and entrance to the pool is included in the cost of your campsite for up to 6 people. The pool, which is open to the public is $5 per person per day. Camping is $22 per night! DUH! We camped there for Father's Day weekend and had the family down. There were 12 of us, so we took turns going to the pool - probably not what they meant, but....

They were constructing new campsites, shelters, cabins and bathhouses with laundry facility when we were there in the summer and they were supposed to open in the fall. I don't think they had them ready, but they should be by spring. Price may go up, but they looked like they were going to be really nice.
