While looking at these interesting pictures.. I was thinking. If I ever owned a pop up again.. I think I would try and find one that did not have a hard top. One with the entire top made from canvas or vinyl. I think that would eliminate a lot of lift system problems. Some of them I have seen have no lift system other than bars and tent posts that fold up and lock into place. Even if you used a a lift system with a canvas top,.. it wouldn't put much strain on pulleys, etc. The main reason I bought a PUP, in the beginning.. was to get off the ground.. and have AC.
I understand the lack of a hard top would eliminate an AC unit on top.. but maybe one could be mounted in the back or front of the lower part of the box.
In most of what I have read about pop ups.. lift systems will pretty much always fail.. sooner or later.

I agree Chuck, a full canvas top would also give the camper that cool tent feel while still enjoying the comforts of an RV
