New Tow Vehicle
Well.. I did it. Took the plunge! Bought a new truck this week. I am excited to have a full size truck.. and anxious to feel the difference towing my camper. I went from a V6 to V8, gained 2000 pounds towing capacity and about 100 horse power.
Going to re-set my WDH hitch for this truck, next week.. and trying to figure out how to hook up my prodigy brake controller.
Here's the one I bought: (dealer's photos)

Congrats on the new truck, it should put a smile on your face every time you tow with it.
Does it not have an integrated brake controller in it?

Re: New Tow Vehicle
No built in brake controller. I have a prodigy p2,,, and can get an adapter for the F150.. that would make it pretty easy to plug in and go.. BUT.. it seems that FORD quit installing the wiring for a brake controller with the 2013 models. In prior years you could find the plug up under the dash, pre-wired and ready to go. All you had to do was get the right adapter to match your aftermarket controller and your vehicle. Well.. guess what.. in 2013 they quit wiring, I guess to save a few bucks. Funny thing.. the plug is still up under the dash, attached to a cable (just like before).. but there are no wires coming out of it. It isn't connected to anything. I researched on the internet.. others folks are finding the same thing. I called FORD and complained.. they are looking into it. If they decide not to do anything.. looks like I will have to pay the dealership about $400 to do the wiring. I AM NOT VERY HAPPY RIGHT NOW. Love the truck... but not happy with this FORD bull$hit.
Re: New Tow Vehicle
Wow, I would not be real happy about that either.
Does the truck have the factory tow option ( I think that means it has both the 4 pin & 7 pin connector on the truck)? If so, you can buy the integrated controller and then have the dealer program the computer to use it. I would think that at this point they would do something like that for you on the fly and not charge you anything.

yes.. it has the tow package.. and I am finding out that the wiring is probably still there for the factory optional controller (in dash). they just quit wiring the aftermarket connector. Maybe I can use the factory set up if I can find it. I read that it is supposed to be behind the dash. The integrated controller usually goes in the little cubby slot just right of the steering wheel. Gonna try and find it today. Not crazy about trying to pull the dash off of a new truck. Anybody have any helpful hints about removing the dash?
Re: New Tow Vehicle
Chuck, will pulling the dash void your warrenty? Wouldnt it just be easier to take your truck to UHaul and let them wire it for you? They wired my Titan.

Re: New Tow Vehicle
how much did it cost? Did you buy the brake controller from them too?SouthWestyKim wrote:Chuck, will pulling the dash void your warrenty? Wouldnt it just be easier to take your truck to UHaul and let them wire it for you? They wired my Titan.
Re: New Tow Vehicle
Yes we got the brake controller from them too, I cant recall how much it was. They also installed my factory OEM Titan hitch. I had them do my nissan hardbody too, which I sold with the brake controller still on it because we had no idea how to dissconnect it under the dash. Give them a call I am sure they can give you a price.

I'm betting you can find all this info on any of the F150 forums. I'd say there is nothing to getting the dash open enough to get to this if that's the route you decide to go.

Thanks for the compliments.. I really feel blessed to have it. I have been wanting a full sized Ford for awhile. I am very happy with the truck.

I am taking the truck back to the dealership tomorrow to have a bed liner installed.. gonna ask them to use their tools to get into the dash and pull the brake controller plug out for me. I ordered the adapter from etrailer today.

Good deal. Once that is done you will need to go tow somewhere for the weekend to see the difference

Re: New Tow Vehicle
decided on the factory controller after all. the dealership made me a pretty good deal. they will install it and the bed liner tomorrow. it will look better and be out of the way up in the dash. in my other truck it was mounted under the dash.. and I was always hitting it with my knee.

Re: New Tow Vehicle
I am pretty happy with my camper.. but it is nice to have the option to pull something s little bigger. I might consider a bigger camper if my wife said she wanted to start camping and wanted more room.. but I doubt that is gonna happen.
Re: New Tow Vehicle
Just look what happened to me. Got bigger truck, then got bigger camper. lol

Re: New Tow Vehicle
You will really like the ford integrated controller. It uses the brake pedal or fluid pressure rather than inertia or a timer. Once set up it works very smoothly. Plus it doesn't look like an add on.
Nice truck!

Re: New Tow Vehicle
Hitched the camper up to the new truck today.. actually didn't have to make any adjustments to the WDH. I ran up the road a little way and was very pleased at how the truck pulls my camper.. very pleased. Was able to set the trailer brake too.. Started at a 6.0 setting.. and ended up coming down to 4.0.. all works great!
Your right afob.. the integrated controller looks great in the dash.
