I know I am kinda rushing the season away, but we will be gone most of the month of June and July, then we will be camp hosting at Natural Tunnel during the month of August, so that leaves us with September and Labor Day.

We are tentatively planning a trip to Grayson Highlands for the long weekend. Anybody interested in going? Arriving Friday afternoon, late and leaving on Monday. It is located off of I-81, exit 45 (therefore, 45 miles into Virginia) and then another 33 miles on Rt 58. It is one of the premier Va State Parks and offers lots and lots of things to do, but does have lots of equestrian type offerings. It is also very high in altitude, so it gets cool or cold early in the fall.

Grayson Highlands have wild ponies that hang out in the campground, eating and sleeping whenever and wherever they want. It is pretty rustic, but they do have water and electric at some sites.

The park offers:

•All campsites are dirt/gravel with picnic tables and grills at each site. Maximum of six campers per site.
•Most sites are wooded; one site is handicapped accessible near bathhouse.
•The horse campground is far from the park's other campgrounds.
•Each site has a fire-ring for cooking and campfires.
•Firewood and ice are available at the park.
•Please deposit all trash in the dumpster as you exit the campground. Recycling containers are next to the dumpster.
•No more than two vehicles per campsite and the camping unit are allowed but additional visitors' vehicles may park so long as the vehicle is safely off the road.
•There's additional parking beside the Country Store. Two vehicles per site. Each additional vehicle on the campsite will be charged the parking fee. Click here for park fees.
•Guests can visit overnight campers but must leave the park by 10 p.m.; no one is to roam around the park campground after 10 p.m.Grayson Highlands

They are part of VA St Park system, so they take reservations, but not for a specific site. You pick it out when you get there of the ones available.

That's great, the kids were asking about Jon, Lily and Caroline (you know he's first on the list) and when we were going to camp with you guys again.

Hope to see you at Natural Tunnel sometime in August?

Grayson Highlands (VA) SP for Labor Day Empty How was the campground?

Post  Familyman68 Mon Aug 27, 2012 10:24 am

Merrykalia, how was the campground? I've got the highlands on my wish list because of the horses. My daughter loves animals. Any reviews or photos you could share?

Familyman, we had to cancel our reservations. We were planning to go for Labor Day, but we were asked to stay on here at Natural Tunnel for the holiday weekend.
