Do you ever have an Outdoor Fire at home?

Post  Richard on Mon Dec 12, 2011 2:43 pm

My kids pick up sticks around the yard, and we build a fire in an outdoor Chiminea-style cast iron fireplace that lives on my deck. Jon (my 6 year old) really loves it, as he gets to put sticks on the fire when I open the wire mesh door. We did this last night and it was a special moment sitting on a bench in front of the fire, looking out across the valley.

Anyone else have a fire ring or outdoor fireplace of some sort at home?

Yes - we have a chimnea that we use for basically the same purpose. We have a large apple tree in the yard as well as grapevines. In the fall when we prune, we stack the vines/limbs beside an out building and then burn them throughout the winter. We will normally build a fire when we get snow and the girls are sleigh riding in the yard. The chimnea sits on the deck, about 15' away from the hill.

If you have never had a steak grilled/smoked using grape vine, it is fabulous.

We heat up the grill until it is about 450 degrees; put the steaks on to sear the outside, then add some water-soaked grapevine and close the lid for about 10 minutes (1 1/2" thick cut). The grapevine gives them some fabulous flavor and smells great while they are cooking. During the summer, we just cut some vine off of the grapevines and use them fresh without soaking.

We used to get steaks at a restaurant that were grilled and tasted great. The owner sold it and we saw him on the lake one day and asked him how he got the flavor and he told us about the grapevines.

Carolyn and I have a small mess wire chimea on our back patio, we like to sit out there and throw some mesquite chunks on the fire for the wonderful desert smell I miss from california. One great outdoor fire idea we made is to use an old metal washtub out of a washer...their enameled with holes and make a beautiful fire container...its like watching a thousand stars twinkle as the light from the fire shines out. I can stare at it for hours... Metal washtubs out of machines are getting rarer since their going front loading and alot of the top loading washers went to plastic tubs.

The mesquite sounds good for the smell. I bet those washer tubs would be great. The holes would provide plenty of air movement.

The Grapevines sound good as well. Any particular type of grape vine, or any I could get.

I think one of mine are Niagra and the other is some type of red, but not sure which one. I don't think it matters.
