I hope that the pics don't tell the whole story. Those sites looked as if they needed some work. Just my 2 cents

I suspect that the horses are the main business and the campground is secondary. Tony swears it great. I may do a drive-through when it warms up.

From the pics the sites looked like they needed some gravel an leveling. I guess with a class a, you don't worry about such small details/ No

If I had a class A, my only worry would be how to pay for it. If I could afford it, I'd buy the one my buddy down in Alabama has for sale. He thought he had it sold, but the buyer's credit wasn't as it should have been. He asked my buddy to finance it, which didn't fly for a second.

Well I don't know your buddy Richard, I hope he isn't like some of the class a people. They pull in the cg and you never see them until they are ready to leave.

Grandview in Unicoi is Open Once Again

Post  Richard on Sun Apr 03, 2011 1:08 pm

Grandview closed for a while, but my buddy Tony sent me this e-mail the other day.

"Barbara and I were in Unicoi the other day and Grand View is open again. A couple bought it August last year and are operational. If you're looking for a short trip you might want to check it out. Tony"

I found this online from the new owner:

Actually, you do know him Tim. He camped and hung around with us when we went to Lakeview with East Tennesseee Camping Club. Had the big yellow fish flag above his camper. His dog chewed through the leash and got away while he was chatting with us.

I just got back from checking out Grand View Ranch RV Park. I'll definately make at least one trip there this summer (The kids made me promise). We met one of the new owners, she was up in an apple tree pruning it. In addition to the apple orchard, they have a blueberry orchard. You can pick your own and pay for them, or they'll have them already picked. There are two ponds. One is going to be converted into a swimming pond/pool. The larger pond is for fishing, and the campsites are arranged around it. The pond-front sites don't have a lot of shade, but there are quite a few sites that do have shade. The place isn't manicured and perfect, but certainly pretty nice. They have horses, and offer riding lessons. There is a pretty big creek (North Indian Creek, I think) that runs along one edge of the property that is stocked with rainbow trout. They have a big field for the kids to play in, and plenty of places to ride bikes. the roads aren't paved, but nicely done with hard packed gravel. There were three big 5th wheel campers there that looked to be permanent. They have a few other critters over in the horse area. I didn't stop and look to see what all they were, but I did see a "caution, chicken crossing" sign. The bath houses were clean and in good repair inside and out. The sites have full hookups.

After touring the campground, we drove about 15 miles up to "Beauty Spot" in the Cherokee National Forrest. Wow, correctly named! The views were amazing. There was still ice and snow on the ground in the deeply shaded places on the way up the mountain. We saw several nice waterfalls, and the usual amazing scenery that we always find on our "adventure riding" trips in this area. We came down the other side of the mountain, which put us back on a paved road just outside of Erwin, TN but on the North Carolina side of the border. Before we got to Erwin, we went to Rock Creek recreation area and walked around a bit.

The campground at Rock Creek isn't open yet, but the place is really nice, with lots of shade. I wouldn't mind camping there either, but it's bear country, plus only 13 sites have electric hookups. None have water or sewer.

Richard, how far is this place from Johnson City? I was just trying to get the driving time for us. We can get to the I-26 interchange in 1 hour 10 minutes dragging our TT. How far from there or how did you go?

I tried it too, Dave, but I figured since he said it had a new owner, they hadn't gotten the website up and running.

The URL works, it's http://www.grandviewranchrvpark.com/

Donna, you go down I-26 to Unicoi and then the campground is about six or seven miles off the interstate. For me, it's only about 35 to 40 minutes. The website has a good directions tool based on google maps.

I didn't ask about the riding lessons, so I don't know how much those are. I'm betting I'll wind up buying a few lessons for the kids. The camping rate with hookups is $25 per night.
