Camper mods... Empty Camper mods...

Post  fisherpal2k Thu Dec 31, 2009 6:01 am

I first started camping with my family as a kid. When I was older and got married I decided to try to take my wife camping and it worked out..... a little bit. No

I will go into that in the stories section. Very Happy

When our daughter came along later in life, we decided to give it another try, we had a pop up and it worked well for awhile and then we upgraded to a TT. When we bought the TT I liked it ok but I decided to give it a few add ons. First I asked the dealer to install an electric jack before we left and to install the covers over the vents.

Sorry no pic of the wnets..
Then I found a neat way to help level the camper as I backed it into wherever we were staying. I added a level on the front of the camper and I can look in the rear view mirror to see it. Sometimes just pulling up or backing up a couple of inches can change the way the TT sets enough that I don't have to block it up much.

After talking with Chuck on another forum I also showed him a way that I had used to put in a battery disconnect so the battery would not drain when it was parked for extended periods of time. I used a battery switch that connects to the post of the battery and will fit in the battery box unseen. Only one warning goes with it. Before you travel, be sure to close it back to let the battery charge up for the trip!!

Theres a couple of things I added also but will post them later.

Nice mods.. I too want to add the LEVEL.. seems like such a simple,.. but very useful tool. Many places I camp are real close to level.. and a few inches forward or back while looking in the rear view mirror would be an easy way to save some adjusting.

fisher.. how big is that level? is it pretty easy to see from inside your tow vehicle?

Camper mods... Empty Level

Post  fisherpal2k Sat Jan 02, 2010 7:31 am

Chuck the level is about 10" long and can be seen from the truck pretty well. I didn't like the way it was supposed to be mounted as it had four screws to mount it with. I used a piece of lexan and bolted it to the lexan and then used 3m automotive tape to mount it on there.
I was suprised to see the tape hold up as well as it has. It really makes a difference when you can just look out the mirror and tell if you are close or not. The lines on it are made to tell how much blocking you will need. I think it is one inch per mark. It is pretty close too. It also has a level for fore and aft on top of it. Since the front of my camper is sloped I can't use it tho. I still use a torpedo level inside to make the final adjustments with.

Wow, that's a level that even an elderly guy like me could see. That would be a must have on a TT or larger. I'm thinking it would be pretty handy even on a small rig like my PUP. Even with the BAL leveler and a drill to turn it, I'd still rather go forward or back a bit to get it as close as possible before the final leveling. It would save a lot of in/out of the vehicle to look at the levels, plus a lot of "shove by hand" adjustments.

I've never been in camping world. What's their story? Membership required?

I should probably make a list of stuff I need to look at while I'm there.

You get 10% off with a membership. They will probably be set up at the RV show. We could always stop at the camping world store on the way down, or on the way back.

Do you have a membership? I'd like to include it as a side trip.

I would like to tag along to the camping world as well. I am not sure where it is in Knoxville so lets meet at the show and then go, ok?

No problem Alan. It really depends on how late we are eating. I'm not sure of their hours.

Camping World (Knoxville).. is actually not in Knoxville.. it's closer to Strawberry Plains. CW is approx 20-25 mins from the RV show (about 15 miles). Alan it will be east of Knoxville.. towards Sevierville.

I might suggest.. that a few of us could meet at Camping World about 10:30am or so.. have about an hour and a half to to look around.. then caravan over to the RV show about noon. I would be willing to be at CW at 10 - 10:30.

Alan if you come into Knoxville on 40.. just stay on 40 towards Sevierville..
take exit #398 (Starwberry Plains)..
turn left at end of exit onto Starwberry Plains Pike
go about 3/4 of a mile and turn right on Huckleberry Springs Rd.
CW is visable from I-40.. you can't miss it.

I never would have thought it would take 20-25 mins from the rv show to camping world. I do like the ideal of meeting there before the show.

Tim.. it's almost 15 miles.. and by the time you exit the interstate (on either side).. I could see it taking that.. especially if Saturday morning shopping traffic is at all busy. I don't think I would allow much less than 20 minutes.

Heck.. some of those traffic lights in Knoxville last 5 minutes.

I guess you could be right Chuck. I guess that most of the drive is on the interstate is what makes it seem quicker.
