What type of HWH do you have in your RV? Atwood or Surburan
How many gals. of water does it hold? 6 or 10
Is your HWH. gas only, electric only or gas & electric?
Does your HWH have DSI? (direct spark ignitor)

Mine is the stove or the microwave, but someone told me today that they might be able to get me a 5-gal 110 unit pretty reasonable. Apparently they make them here in Johnson City, and he claims he has a friend that works there that can get one of the ones they test vigoursly for quality control at a cheap price. Now this may just be all talk, but just in case, I've figured out where I'll put it.

Back in my early days of driving a truck, I did pick up a load of hwh from somewhere in Johnson City. I can't remember the name of them but they were highly recommended

Where would you put it, and let me know if they have a sratch-n-dent sale or something.

If I had a front trunk, I'd put it in there, but since I don't I've figured a way to possibly fit it int he cabinet that has the water tank and electrical (under dinette bunk next to kitchen) if that doesn't work, I could certainly put it under the other dinette bench, but that would be a last resort, as that's the one I have to take out most often to work on the lift system.

Alan, If I can get a deal on something like that, I'll try to get two of them.

My hot water heater is also an ATWOOD gas unit.. It has a 6 gallon tank.. Although it has never failed.. I wish it were electric. Sometimes it's hard to get started.

The more I research small water heaters, the more I think I'm not going to bother with one in my PUP. I started looking at those instand warm shower things. Wal-mart has one that people either love or hate, and Coleman has one that looks really nice. The wal-mart cheapie is about $100 and the Coleman unit iw roughly $200. I have a coffee pot, and a propane stove, and a big pot. I just can't see sinking $200 into the effort.

I called the water heater manufacturer (American Water Heater) here in Johnson City to ask about their 2.5 and 6 gallon heaters that plug into 110. They have a 1-800 number on their website for sales. I told the guy that I was looking for a water heater for a camper and wanted to know about his small plug in models. He told me that they didn't make water heaters for campers. Then he asked if I needed it to run on propane. I told him no, just 110 electric. He told me to go to lowes and ask for a price on item numbers 26349 (2.5 gallon) and 140462 (6 gallon) as they would plug right into a 110 outlet (They use 15amps!). The guy was nice, but not really all that helpful. The concept of having a 110 appliance in a camper seemed to really throw him. He made it clear that their sales to the public were through Lowes, and not avialiable directly from them. I didn't even ask the guy about "test items". He had nicely made it really clear that they didn't sell direct. the new ones are about $200 to $250. There are comparable models at Home depot, at comprable prices.

Nest I looked into the models that are made for RV's. They are $300 and up to $500 depending on what you get and where. The popular "suburban" models are that much, plus another $45 for the "door".

Geezh. My stove and pot are looking better and better. I may steal my wife's electric "hot pot" as that little bugger heats up water in a hurry. I have one of those little metal coils with a clip that sticks in a coffee cup to heat it up. It will boil water in a coffee cup. Perhaps it would warm water in a pot and use the campground's electric to do it. I've also thought about finding a used 2 to 2.5 gallon coffee pot at a yard sale or flea market , like the ones that are used to serve at big parties. I could fill it, sit it on the counter, and have hot water when I need it. I don't have a shower anyway. The biggest problem would be the humidity that the coffee pot would be putting into the air inside the camper. The second bigest is that there isn't exactly an abundance of extra counter space that I could give up for the pot, so some adjustments to my "this goes here" routine would have to be made.

My other last hope for having a real water heater in the camper is to find a junk one that someone is parting out. They had several travel trailers at Observation Knob a few years ago that were abandoned year-rounders. They were quietly auctioning them off. I was told they could probably be bought for under $500 each. I looked and decided that they were too far gone to fix up. I never even thought about buying one for parts. Then again, where would I have put the old junk parts camper. "The Clark Family Clubhouse" is already stretching it in this neighborhood. I need to live on a few acres, with woods or a barn to hide such things in. That's what I did when I was fixing up an old Mustang. Car in the garage and parts car back in the woods. (Yes, I know, a Foxworthy image just came into your head.) Just be glad I'm not Your neighbor, except at the campgrounds!
