Packable Fire Ring? Empty Packable Fire Ring?

Post  Richard Mon Dec 14, 2009 3:59 pm

I'd like to have a fire ring of my own, but they are big, messy and sooty. I'd like to come up with an idea for something simple that would easily come apart, with pieces that nest together (say four pieces) and fit in a burlap bag, even after it is super heated and gets rusty.

Any ideas? Is there a fire and heat-proof velcro? I'm thinking possibly screen door eye & hook latches to hold it together. I'm in the dreaming stage though, so I may wake up and forget the whole thing.

Here is an ideal. Get a tractor trailer rim. Cut into 4 sections. Weld some type of hasp to reconnect the ring. Just a wild ideal.

I have seen portable fire rings at stores like Walmart that come apart and store in a flat box. I have seen them as low as $35 and as much as $80

This one's at Bass Pro Shops

Dave, that's the general idea, but those look to have three screws at each joint. I'm thinking of something with one loose rivet (or similar) that would fold without disassembling the pieces, and then hook together at just one joint with something that would be fast and easy. The ) is the metal and the . is the rivet/pivot point.

).)` ).) Kind of like those folding metal masonry rulers. but curved with a hook at one end and an eye at the other.

Even if I find what I have in mind, I really question if it would hold up to the heat and repeated setup/fold-down. It would likely rust out at the pivot point and become useless after only a few trips.

Again, just a daydream. Not a real quest.

I called a buddy of mine from back in Alabama (Scottie) and he told me to abandon the idea of a folding fire ring. Scottie says that anything that rusts and gets super-heated now and then shouldn't have moving parts. Good point I replied. He told me to look around for a steel barrel or thin-walled pipe that is the right size to fit over my spare tire. Cut off six inches or so of it, and I have my fire ring with no worries about storing it inside my camper, or having it take up additional space. That's the plan I'm going with.
